Would you tell us a little bit about the Maple Community Association? What does everybody need to know?
The Maple Community Association is a nonprofit organization based in Takoma Park, Maryland, founded in 2023. Our mission focuses on supporting underserved youth and seniors through mentorship, community engagement, and wellness initiatives. We aim to promote family sustainability, health, and wellness by providing tailored community resources and mentorship programs. Our vision is to create a safe and unified environment where young people can thrive and seniors can maintain their independence while staying connected within the community.
What are the challenges associated with creating a nonprofit?
Establishing a nonprofit comes with various challenges. To start with, you have to file articles of incorporation and apply for 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. And you have to secure funding, which is often difficult, especially in the early stages. You need a qualified board that understands fiduciary duties. Most importantly, you can’t lose sight of your mission.
What did it feel like to win an Azalea Award?
Winning the Azalea Award was a deeply gratifying and humbling experience. It validated the hard work and contributions we've made to our community. There was a strong sense of pride in knowing that our efforts have been recognized. It was an emotional moment, filled with reflection on the journey that led to this honor and gratitude for the support I've received from so many along the way.
What’s something that you’re looking forward to this year?
This year, I'm particularly excited about our upcoming Juneteenth Celebration. It represents a time to honor freedom, celebrate community, and recognize the rich history and culture of Black Americans. I'm also looking forward to potential new partnerships and collaborations that can foster professional growth and align with our mission.
