Spring 2013 Grants

The Takoma Foundation awarded 14 grants totaling $19,048 for our 2013 spring cycle. Thanks to all our supporters who help make this happen ... and to our amazing grantees for the work they are doing in our community. 


Spring 2013 grantees and projects

Conservation Montgomery Community Greening Project. This ongoing community tree-planting project uses GIS mapping and the Montgomery County Urban Tree Canopy Assessment to identify the most denuded sections of the county. The project adds new trees to deforested urban areas that will eventually grow to replace much of our lost canopy and will aid in improving stream and creek quality in local sub watersheds. This will take place in the Long Branch neighborhood.

Eastern Middle School Gayle Daleny Poetry Slam and Writing Workshops. Gayle Danley, award-winning Baltimore slam poet, will engage students with a performance for the entire 8th grade. Classroom workshops will follow, during which students will have the opportunity to develop their own slam poetry pieces.

Pinecrest Community Association Multicultural Film Series. In late summer and September of 2013, neighbors and all Takoma Park residents to a series of films with multicultural themes, in combination with opportunities for personal story-telling and music-making. The goal is to help the community become acquainted with the diversity of our backgrounds and heritages. 

Create Arts Center Smart Kid Art. CREATE’s smARTkids program at East Silver Spring Elementary School is held afterschool in classrooms provided by the school. East Silver Spring Elementary School teachers and counselors will select 8-12 students who are at-risk academically and/or socially to participate in this youth enrichment program.

Takoma Radio/Art for the People Takoma Radio Producer Posse. The Takoma Radio Producer Posse is teaching people how to gather and produce stories to be broadcast on the Takoma Radio website.

Takoma Park Presbyterian Church Takoma Park Shared-Use Community Kitchen. Funding for the purchase of an under-counter refrigerator. 

Rolling Terrace PTA Soccer fest 2013. Grant to support the Soccer fest with prizes, food and equipment.

African Immigration and Refugee Foundation AIRF Youth Art Beat. This week-long arts enrichment program is designed for 5th-11th grade youth from the African diaspora, the children of families residing in Takoma Park and Silver Spring. Participants will share their stories of immigration and family history through workshops with professional teaching artists in visual, media, and performing arts.

Montgomery Blair High School PTSA African American Student Achievement Program. To provide critical seed funding to support the creation of a new program for African-American students through a newly created joint staff and parent committee (the African-American Student Achievement Program).

Pyramid Atlantic The Art of the Game. Through The ART of the GAME program, youth accomplish a strengthened self‐identity through the creative process of screen printing; enhanced team-working skills such as decisionmaking, cooperation, encouraging others, sharing, and understanding roles and positions; and physical activity through participation in a team sport.

Montgomery Housing Partnership Long Branch Fall Community Festival. Support for a community-building event that will serve as a follow up of an art event this spring. 

Montgomery Blair High School Engaging Youth through Music. Support of professional-level upgrades to the Music Technology/Piano Lab at Blair High School to enhance academic and technical skills, and support independent student projects.

Piney Branch Elementary School Maglev Systems. The purpose of this activity is to allow 180 fifth-grade students to use science and engineering skills to design, build, test and operate a Maglev system. 

Jazzfest. Jazzfest is one of the community activities we support each year.
