Fall 2013 Grants

This fall the Takoma Foundation awarded 20 grants totaling $21,875.00. Thanks to the supporters whose contributions make our grantmaking possible, and to all the organizations that our working to build community and change lives.

  • Ayuda (Sister to Sister) -- To invest in the counseling of immigrant women who are survivors of sexual abuse, domestic violence and exploitation.
  • Barker Foundation -- To provide training materials for donated training to TPES and PBES on adoption competency training
  • Blair High School PTSA -- Training in Spanish language for faculty and staff at the BHS, EMS and TPMS.
  • Community Bridges -- Expansion of the mentoring program of high school girls at Blair.
  • Crittenton Services -- To promote the healthy development, emotional success and long-term self-sufficiency for teen mothers and their children
  • Docs in Progress -- To continue the filming of stories of people in the Takoma Park community.
  • First Book-Montgomery -- To develop a pilot program that will bring businesses and organizations together to provide books for Rolling Terrace classrooms.
  • Gandhi Brigade -- To help defray the costs of the Youth Media Festival.
  • Ministries United Silver Spring/Takoma Park -- To help Takoma Park residents with eviction, utility, or prescription assistance, on a emergency basis.
  • Maitri House International Community -- To help facilitate neighborhood dinners to build a better community.
  • Old Takoma Business Association (Art Hop Trolley) -- This grant is to pay for the trolley which connects 4th Street, Takoma, DC and Old Town together as well as allow residents in different parts of the city to participate in the Art Hop weekend
  • Old Takoma Business Association (ReCycle – Please Sit on the Art) --An extension of the popular Please Sit on the Art program of 2013. The OTBA will expand the number of artists participating in the project
  • Rolling Terrace Elementary School -- To install composting equipment in the school for the students to compost food scraps.
  • Rolling Terrace Elementary School PTA (Rolling Terrace Edible Schoolyard) -- To establish four small garden plots that will provide student learning and engagement opportunities.
  • Takoma Ensemble (Takoma Ensemble Inaugural Year) -- The project will fund three concerts in the first half of the year, one as part of the "We Are Takoma" series in the Takoma Park Community Center.
  • Takoma Park Volunteer Fire Department -- To buy materials necessary for an accredited class for CPR and first aid, which will be free to the community.
  • Takoma Park 4H Club -- To build 20 salad tables which will be given to local daycare centers and schools. The tables will be kept up by the members of the 4H Club.
  • Takoma Park Community Band -- The Takoma Park Community Band will perform a concert to celebrate the ethnic diversity of the community and the band's 40th anniversary. The concert will take place in Takoma Park and will be free and open to the public.
  • Takoma United for an Engaged Community – This grant is for a four-phase project consisting of: 1) Taste of Maple Avenue potluck and community block party;2) MLK Day of service work and celebration; 3) A series of art murals to be temporarily installed around town, focusing on the dream of integrating diverse peoples into one community; 4) A feasibility study for a new outdoors market on Maple Avenue where, potentially, fresh food, crafts, clothes and other items would be sold on a weekly basis.
  • Takoma Park Elementary School -- To continue and expand a book and breakfast club which brings immigrant parents to the school to read with their children. TPES is expanding the program to include an afternoon session for parents who work in the mornings
