A Visit to Gettysburg

On August the 11th the Takoma Park Community Action Group (TPCAG) along with Mapleview Residents Improvement Association and the Essex House Leadership and various youth partook on a bus trip to Gettysburg, PA. State Delegate Tom Hucker arrived to send to off the eager group.

The group consisted of low-income youth and seniors from the Maple View and Essex House, and Franklin apartments for a day of cultural, historic and inter-generational enrichment. The group viewed the Battle of Gettysburg reenactment, discussed the history of the event and shared their personal stories. (To see a video, click here.)

Takoma Foundation funding was used for the bus charter, documentary, lunch, and museum admission.

The purpose of the trip was to expose youth and seniors with limited economic resources to a historical event. Further, an intergenerational bond was formed as everyone engaged in discussion about the trip and its impact. TPCAG says the historic trip created a greater respect and appreciation for sacrifices that our ancestors have made and will leave a lasting impression among participants.
